The right pair of socks is essential to complete your ensemble. Here are ten commandments to give your valet on choosing which socks to lay out with the rest of your outfit:
The color of your socks doesn’t need to match your outfit but works best if inspired from one color in your shirt, jacket, tie or pocket square. You do not wear white socks with anything except sports shoes. If you need to go conventional and classic, choose an argyle. If you are wearing sandals, no socks should be laid out. The socks on your two feet need to be the same. Even creativity with socks has a limit! If you are dressing for a black tie event, choose socks with a black base and subtle design. If your sock has a hole or a permanent stain, discard the pair and replace with a fresh, undamaged one. Your socks should not merge into your shoes or your trousers. Even if the base color does, the pattern colors should pop. When wearing solid socks, you like to accent (contrast or complement) the color of your tie or pocket square. You never match the pattern on your socks to a pattern in the rest of your ensemble.
